We have gathered a number of links to official City resources, local advocacy organizations, and more general information on Vision Zero.
Official City of Ann Arbor resources
- The City of Ann Arbor's Moving Together Toward Vision Zero Comprehensive Transportation Plan is the transportation element of Ann Arbor's Comprehensive Plan. It was passed in 2021, and "set forth a list of strategies and opportunities for improving the safety of Ann Arbor's streets, and proposed a data-driven approach to prioritizing street improvements in the interest of public safety and enhanced mobility for all."
- Ann Arbor's Transportation Commission is an advisory body to City Council and "plays a crucial role in shaping the future of transportation, ensuring it meets the needs of all residents." They meet on the third Wednesday each month.
- Ann Arbor Roadway Rightsizing (A2R2) is a project that the City of Ann Arbor is undertaking to improve safety, reduce vehicle speeds, and enhance multimodal connectivity along arterial streets.
- North Main Transportation Study is a study to learn about opportunities to improve safety, increase mobility options, and support land use density along North Main.
- Miller Avenue Improvements Project is a project to replace underground utilities and pavement on Miller Avenue from Newport to downtown Ann Arbor. As part of this project, the city narrowed travel lanes in order to install a protected two-way bikeway from Maple into downtown, connecting to the already-existing bikeway at First.
Local advocacy
- Crashes in Ann Arbor is a blog by local transportation safety advocate and Ann Arbor Transportation Commissioner Peter Houk. It catalogues and analyzes fatal and serious injury crashes involving vulnerable road users in Ann Arbor, touching on possible causes and improvements that may prevent (or reduce the severity of) similar crashes in the future.
- Walk Bike Washtenaw is a coalition of various local organizations and individuals "working to make Washtenaw County a national leader in bicycling & walking."
- Bicycle Alliance of Washtenaw is another organization working to build Washtenaw County's bicycle community and advocate for safe infrastructure.
- Common Cycle is Ann Arbor's bike co-op, providing community workspace, helpful voluneers, and educational opportunities to help you fix and maintain your bike.
- Neighbors for More Neighbors Ann Arbor supports Ann Arbor for All, the city's Comprehensive Land Use Plan. Land use policy and transportation policy go hand in hand. With more people and more density in Ann Arbor we will need to make sure that all those people can get around safely. We support Neighbors for More Neighbors and their goals for secure, abundant homes for everyone in Ann Arbor.
- Wagner Walks is a group advocating for safe pedestrian and transit infrastucture along Wagner and Dexter Rd in Scio Township.
- Transit Riders United (TRU) is a Detroit-based nonprofit organization that has worked for 25 years advocating for improved public transportation throughout the metro Detroit region.
Non-local resources
- The Vision Zero Network "is a collaborative, nonprofit campaign helping communities set and reach the goal of Vision Zero — eliminating traffic fatalities and severe injuries among all road users — while increasing safe, healthy, equitable mobility." Ann Arbor is a member community.
- The National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) Safe System Approach provides guidance to local governments on designing safe streets, such as their Urban Bikeway Design Guide.
- The United States Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) also publishes guidance on Zero Deaths and Safe System approach.
- There are too many to list, but there are hundreds of organizations doing great work in other cities in the fight for safe streets. Check out New York City's Transportation Alternatives, Los Angeles's Streets Are For Everyone (SAFE), and Chicago's Bike Grid Now.
Tools
- The City of Ann Arbor's Crash Reporting contains interactive reports/dashboards/maps to provide the Transportation Commission and the public with an understanding of the City’s crash history, crash trends, and high injury network.
- The AARP's Walk Audit Toolkit is a "self-service guide for assessing a community's walkability."
- Streetmix and 3DStreet are great interactive tools for visualizing street designs.
